With the ongoing development
of the former Woodlands site - now called 'Victoria Hill' - some people
have expressed a concern about the institution's cemetery. There is
no need to worry. The cemetery is totally secure and separate from the
development of the site.
Some years ago a committee
was established by British Columbia Buildings Corp. (BCBC) to oversee
the planning of a memorial garden as commemoration of the cemetery for
Woodlands (formerly known as 'Woodlands School', and 'Provincial Hospital
for the Insane'). The committee was made up of people closely linked
to the institution, its residents, the property owners, and others knowledgeable
about cemeteries and cemetery landscape. A plan for the commemoration
of this cemetery (noted to hold burials for the years 1922 to 1958)
was approved and will be carried out in due course.
